How to Prep Your Vehicle for Kamloops Winter Driving

Kamloops winters can be unpredictable — mild one week, bitterly cold and icy the next. Getting caught off guard with a vehicle that isn't ready for winter driving is not only inconvenient, it can be genuinely dangerous. Here's everything you should address before the cold months arrive.

Winter Tires: Non-Negotiable in BC

If you drive on BC highways between October 1 and April 30, winter tires are required by law on most routes in the province. But beyond the legal requirement, the safety difference is dramatic. Winter tires provide significantly more grip below 7°C because of their softer rubber compound and deeper, more aggressive tread patterns.

Book your tire swap early — shops get extremely busy in October and November. Don't wait until the first snowfall.

Battery Check

Cold weather is the number one killer of aging car batteries. A battery that's three or more years old and hasn't been tested recently could leave you stranded on a -15°C morning. Have it load-tested at your mechanic — it only takes a few minutes and can save you a lot of grief.

Coolant System

Your engine coolant (antifreeze) needs to be at the correct concentration ratio to prevent freezing in extreme cold. If you're unsure when it was last flushed or tested, have a shop check the freeze protection level with a simple test strip or refractometer.

Did you know? Old, degraded coolant can also corrode your radiator and heater core from the inside — a flush every 2–3 years protects the whole cooling system, not just against freezing.

Brakes

Winter driving demands more from your braking system. Stopping distances on snow and ice are already longer — worn brake pads or warped rotors only make it worse. Have your brakes inspected before winter and replace anything that's marginal. Don't wait until you hear grinding.

Windshield and Visibility

Replace worn wiper blades with winter-rated blades designed to handle snow buildup. Fill up your washer fluid reservoir with a winter formula rated to at least -40°C — the summer formula will freeze in your lines. And inspect your windshield for any chips or cracks: cold temperatures can cause a small chip to expand into a full crack quickly.

Lights

Winter days are short and visibility is often poor. Check all your exterior lights — headlights (low and high beam), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs before winter. In BC, it's required to drive with headlights on in reduced visibility conditions.

4WD and AWD Systems

If your vehicle has four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, test it before winter. Engage 4WD in a safe, empty area to make sure the system engages and disengages properly. AWD vehicles should have all four tires with matching tread depth — mismatched tires can damage your drivetrain.

Emergency Kit

Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle: ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables or a jump-start pack, warm blanket, traction mat or sand, and a flashlight. In Kamloops, you're never far from help — but in the surrounding mountains, being prepared matters.
