Spring Vehicle Maintenance Checklist for Kamloops Drivers

Kamloops winters are hard on vehicles. Cold temperatures, icy roads, road salt, and freeze-thaw cycles all take a toll — and by the time spring rolls around, your car or truck may be carrying more damage than you realize. The good news? A thorough spring checkup can catch small problems before they become big ones.

Here's the checklist we recommend for every Kamloops driver as the weather warms up.

1. Swap Those Winter Tires

Once temperatures are consistently above 7°C, winter tires are actually working against you. The soft rubber compound designed for grip in the cold wears much faster on warm pavement and reduces fuel efficiency. Plan your tire swap for mid-March to April depending on the forecast.

While the tires are off, have the shop inspect your rims for cracks or corrosion from road salt — especially on the bead seat area where seal issues often develop.

2. Brake Inspection

Winter driving is hard on brakes. Extended stopping distances on ice and snow, combined with cold-weather rotor warping, often leave brake components worn or degraded by spring. Have your pads, rotors, and brake fluid inspected. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point — a flush may be due if it's been over two years.

3. Check Your Battery

Cold temperatures reduce battery capacity significantly. A battery that struggled through winter may not be reliable when summer heat adds additional strain. Have your battery tested — a good shop can load-test it in minutes and tell you whether it's still healthy or approaching end-of-life.

4. Inspect Your Windshield and Wipers

Winter wiper blades (if you run them) should come off and be replaced with standard summer blades. Inspect your windshield for chips or cracks that expanded through freeze-thaw cycles — a small chip can spider-web rapidly in warm weather if left unaddressed. Many chips can be repaired quickly at an auto body shop.

5. Check Suspension and Steering

Potholes are a major issue on Kamloops roads in spring, and they wreak havoc on suspension components. Listen for clunking, knocking, or pulling when you drive. Have a mechanic check your tie rods, ball joints, shocks, and struts. Worn suspension components affect ride quality, tire wear, and most importantly — safety.

6. Fluid Top-Up and Inspection

Spring is a great time to check all your vehicle's fluids: engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid (if applicable), transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Swap out the winter washer fluid for a summer formula.

Pro tip: If your oil change is due within the next 3,000–5,000 km, do it now as part of your spring service so everything is fresh heading into driving season.

7. Undercarriage Wash

Road salt accumulates in your vehicle's undercarriage all winter. Left unchecked, it accelerates rust on frame components, brake lines, and exhaust systems. A thorough underbody wash in spring — ideally from a professional detail shop — removes the salt before it does long-term damage.

8. Air Filter and Cabin Filter

Winter driving kicks up a lot of fine debris. Your engine air filter and cabin air filter both take a beating. A clogged cabin filter reduces HVAC efficiency and air quality inside the vehicle. A dirty engine air filter affects fuel economy and performance. Both are inexpensive and quick to replace.
